Q: What about borders?

A: Borders are optional (if we score before framing) and required if scoring begins after framing. (Unless, of course, no scoring is desired). We can also float a border in the center of a room.

Q: How do we protect the floors?

A: There are some simple housekeeping rules to follow before we arrive. After the floors have been stained and allowed to dry a day or two, they should be covered for the remainder of the job to protect them from spills, glue, marks, paints, etc. We can do this for an additional charge (usually $250 per 1000 sq.feet), but we prefer that the owner or builder cover them since they can monitor the job site after we leave.

Q: What are some of the most common made mistakes?

A: These vary from writing on the floors with red or black markers to nailing support walls into the slab. We provide builders and framers with detailed instructions to prevent most common mistakes.

Q: What do you charge for your services?

A: Variables include number of colors, pattern, square footage and geographic location. We use a sliding scale, with the price decreasing as the square footage increases. Based on your specifications, we can give you a rough estimate send a proposal in writing within a day or two of your call. We can also send you a price sheet for standard jobs.

Q: What is the best way to clean my finished stained concrete floors?

A: Clean the floors with a dry or wet mop only. A squeegee works very well on outdoor patios. Do NOT use any kind of special cleaners, soaps, vinegar or chemicals. Disinfect with a solution of 2 percent bleach and water.

Q: Do you work on older floors?

A: This depends on the condition of the concrete. In many cases, the floors can be sanded to remove or minimize stains and reopen the pores of the concrete. While the results are not the same as with working with new concrete, we have been getting nice results. We ask the client to pull up and remove carpet before we arrive. We can also resurface the floors… but this does add to the cost. The best results are ALWAYS with new concrete that has not been compromised.

Q: What are the color choices?

A: Even with our color chart (found on this site), tones will vary according to the concrete composition and conditions during which the concrete was poured. The sheen also varies depending on the concrete’s porosity and sealer/wax finish you select. We recommend a “satin” finish for ease of maintenance.

Q: How do I know what stains will look like on my floor?

A: Before we start the job, we can provide samples for approval in an area that will not be stained. (For example, we might lay them where the bath or cabinets will go later.) We can usually make the tones lighter or darker: warmer (more rust) or cooler (more green/brown.) Keep in mind, however that we are working with acids not pigments and that stains will adept to the unique composition of your concrete. Because all concrete is different, your stained floor will be unique to your home or business.
